In the late 70's she became acquainted with Capri Arts and Crafts where Tole painting was taught and practiced by many. This is where she found her new passion. She spent many hours emulating the Tole Painting Masters of France, Britain, Russia and Japan, and began to teach this art herself.

"I started painting in water colors about ten years ago.
It was a welcome replacement for oils and acrylics. I consider myself an intermediate painter as I have not reached that place where I've found my "style". I like to paint many subjects and use my camera when I see things with contrast, color and emotion -be they animal, vegetable or mineral. I am a slow painter and relish the nitty gritty. I will always paint."

Jan has been engaged in one art form or another all her life. She grew up doing pencil drawings and oil painting with her mother capturing the rural landscapes of the California and Oregon countryside.

When she moved to Bodega Bay she still appreciated the art of Tole Painting and still practiced it, but began to experiment with Watercolor with Susan Cornelis in 2003 and has not looked back since. In the last seven years Jan has developed her Watercolor portfolio. She has won awards, attended workshops and sold her paintings at many local exhibitions.
